In this semester’s pledge class we have two legacies. Greg Kuhlman who’s brother is a current member at Duke University; and Chris Tobin whose father is a 1980 graduate of the Delta Zeta Chapter. It is exciting to see our chapter growing at a steady rate. Attending The Summit, a National event focused on recruitment, was extremely beneficial to our chapter, and we feel we received the best of the bunch. This year our chapter collectively decided to raise our GPA to pledge the Delta Zeta Chapter from a 2.25 to a 2.4. This is the highest standard set by any fraternity on campus.

Some of our brothers have been extremely fortunate to travel around the nation to attend National Delta Sigma Phi events. The first of which took place in St. Louis, Missouri. During National Convention our brothers got to network with other Delta Sigs from all over the country. It was amazing for us to see the way things are voted on within the Fraternity and to see so many people that have influenced the Fraternity. Over Christmas break two of our brothers attended The Summit, which was held in Indianapolis, Indiana. During this event we learned about all different aspects of recruitment and different chapter practices. They were able to pay a visit to the Taggart Mansion and see some interesting memorabilia. In January, 10 brothers went to Atlanta, Georgia for the Regional Leadership Academy. Here the brothers learned about accountability and ways to make each brother more responsible. We have found these National events to be extremely helping in running the chapter.

Throughout the year the Delta Zeta Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi has restructured its Executive Council policies and proceedings. Being a chapter founded on values such as brotherhood, respect, ethics, scholarship, and service we offer an educational opportunity for holding our brothers accountable for their actions and for setting a standard of behavior. We have found that it is not always appropriate for one brother to place sanctions on another brother. We have created a Standards Board that follows set guidelines about how to handle different problems. In doing this we find it is a more constructive way of handling issues and allows the brotherhood to learn from our actions. Currently the chapter is looking to extend our Executive Council to better delegate chapter responsibilities.

The Brothers of the Delta Zeta Chapter have taken every opportunity to become more involved on campus. We strive to support our fellow Greeks as well as High Point University whenever we can. Knowing sorority girls are often our best promoters, we work hard to support all of their events. We had a contestant in Zeta Tau Alpha’s Big Man on Campus Pageant who read an original poem to his girlfriend during the talent portion. We also attended the Zeta’s balloon release. These events raised money for the Susan G Koman Breast Cancer Foundation. We all came out for the Kappa Delta’s Shamrock Dance-a-thon where we enjoyed dancing to the Chris Lane Band all night long. We helped raise money for Prevent Child Abuse America. We participated in the Phi Mu’s week-long Hoop-a-Palooza fundraiser for The Children’s Miracle Network. We also came out for the sororities Bid Day celebrations. This year HPU added a 5th sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. This year we were partnered with Kappa Delta and Kappa Alpha Psi for Greek Week. Our theme was the city of Chicago and we did a special Blues Brothers dance. Although we came in first in many events including the eating contest, our dancing skills did not seal the win for us.

Our favorite campus activity that we have participated in this year has been working the concession stand at the university’s basketball games. While serving the High Point community, we were also able to accept donations for our service. Every year the university hosts a prayer breakfast during the holidays. This year our brothers were able to serve the breakfast and participate in the events of the morning. We also enjoy serving at the Chapel as service and fellowship hosts. If you have had a chance to view High Point University’s spring 2010 catalog you may have noticed a group of Delta Sigs welcoming World War II Veterans. After a commemoration visit to Washington D.C. the Brothers joined the community of the Triad to welcome these veterans back and thank them for their service.

Of course, we have continued our tradition of Sig Bowling at Tar Heel Lanes to help raise money for the American Red Cross. At the end of the fall semester the Delta Zeta Chapter held their first annual Dodge Ball Tournament. The purpose of this event was to show students ways to have fun without alcohol. The majority of Greek Organizations of campus participated as well as independent groups of students. The winning team received gift certificates to Harris Teeter. If you have driven by campus lately you may have noticed some changes on the section of College Drive adopted by the Delta Zeta Chapter, but we still own it and continue to maintain its appearance.

Throughout the year, the Delta Zeta Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi has built a strong and growing relationship with their local chapter of the American Red Cross. The Brothers started the fall semester by hosting an event at a local Chick-Fil-A for disaster education. The Delta Sigs dressed in costumes and spoke with children and families about what to do in dangerous situations. The brothers also spent a number of weeks helping the Red Cross organize a furniture auction; all the proceeds went to the Red Cross’ Youth Education Program. Currently the brothers are working on a service week, in which they will perform over 300 hours of community service in one week.
